My Special Trophy From Spain

My Special Trophy From Spain 3

For a few years I’ve been attempting to hunt European Roe deer, but because of the season (late spring/early summer) it hasn’t worked out.  Finally, this last hunt in Spain granted me with one such opportunity.

While in Spain, Tom, myself, and Bruno Rosich of  Trophy Hunting Spain traveled to the Pyrenees in pursuit of a Roe deer to film for Tom’s television show ‘Eye of the Hunter’ The Roe deer live in these gorgeous mountains and will often be found along the forest edges in meadows painted with wildflowers. We’d attempt to quietly walk in, but often heard the disturbingly-frightening barks from the Roe deer who noticed us first. Time and time again we were busted, but perseverance kept us going.

Finally on the last afternoon of the last day I got lucky.  From an opposing mountain, we glassed a Roe buck feeding in a meadow. Because I needed to close the distance to utilize my Aimpoint Red Dot Sight we needed to quietly sneak in. Finally into position to shoot, with the sun about to set (at 9:15pm), I placed my rifle into the V of a tree, rested my right elbow on a spotting scope (to create a firm rest), squeezed the trigger and dropped the Roe deer.

The female Roe deer lingered for a while, but I knew she’d soon replace him with a good-looking buck (that I previously and unsuccessfully stalked) who lived nearby.

This deer, where small, is so special and consider myself blessed to have finally taken one. Furthermore, it’s one of the best meats I’ve ever eaten! Sadly, Bruno had to keep the meat as the US Dept. of Agriculture won’t allow me to import it!

What do you think about taking an animal that is monogamous with one female?
