Flying-Fish or Fly-Fishing or A Little of Both!

Jun 19, 2012, 1:00 PM EDT

Big Brown Fly Fish

I haven’t done much fly fishing; in fact I don’t think you can really count what I’ve done as ‘fly-fishing’ since it was on a trout farm where fish would bite at a hook!

When Bruno, of Trophy Hunting Spain suggested that Tom and I include a side trip to fish in both the high and lower Pyrenean Mountains, we both jumped at the opportunity.

After Tom was successful in taking a Gredos Ibex and I was lucky with a Roe Deer, we transferred to fly-fishing alongside Ivan Tarin of Salvelinus Fishing Adventures.

First, I’m surprised that Spain has so much to offer in natural beauty, wildlife diversity, and outdoor action; but what I didn’t know was that Spain has exceptional fly-fishing (not that I know much about fly-fishing, but Tom and Bruno do) of which I personally gauge on how quickly I was able to land a fish on my dry-fly… of course, the coaching from Ivan (a world-famous fly-fishing expert) probably helped a tiny bit too!

After instruction and applying my ‘new-found technique’, I was quick to land fish. Ivan would explain exactly what I needed to do to place my dry-fly precisely where the fish was and, if I was obedient, I would catch the fish… however, setting the hook and bringing the fish in was a little tricky –one fish learned how to fly when I set the hook as I launched him sailing through the air! Ivan and I laughed the entire time and I took great pleasure fishing these magically gorgeous Spanish rivers. Heck, Tom even landed his personal record with a 26” Brown Trout!

Now that I’ve moved to Montana, I intend to fly-fish as much as possible; do you have any tips to help me to become a better fly-fisher-woman?
